Gregorian reforms
   This term refers to the ecclesiastical and canonical reforms enacted by Pope Gregory VII (1073-1085); these reforms, which emphasized the authority of the Church over the state in regard to the investiture of bishops and otherprelates, the eradication of clerical simony, and the imposition of clerical celibacy, met with considerable opposition from both secular rulers and clergy but were an important step in the development of papal authority.
